2024年12月1日に88歳で逝去したジャズフォトグラファー・中平穂積。その初となる追悼展「THE TRAJECTORY OF JAZZ ― Jazzの軌跡 ―」が、2026年8月25日よりフランス・パリと東京（浜離宮恩賜庭園）の二都市で同時開催される。本展は、中平穂積の功績を顕彰するとともに、その作品が持つ芸術的価値を国際社会へ発信する大規模回顧展である。

Opening simultaneously in Paris and Tokyo (Hamarikyu Gardens) on August 25, 2026, THE TRAJECTORY OF JAZZ is the first memorial retrospective dedicated to legendary jazz photographer Hozumi Nakadaira (1936–2024). The exhibition honors his enduring legacy and presents the artistic power of his work to an international audience.

中平穂積は、1961年のアート・ブレイキー初来日公演の撮影を皮切りに、ジョン・コルトレーン、マイルス・デイビス、ビル・エヴァンス、セロニアス・モンクをはじめとする世界的ジャズミュージシャンを40年以上にわたり撮影。寺山修司、三島由紀夫、村上春樹 等、数々の著名人も愛する伝説のジャズ喫茶「DIG」「DUG」のオーナーとしても知られ、ジャズフォトグラファーの第一人者として世界のジャズ文化の発展に大きく貢献した。

Starting with Art Blakey’s first Japan tour in 1961, Hozumi Nakadaira photographed jazz legends including John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, and Thelonious Monk for more than 40 years. As owner of the legendary jazz cafés DIG and DUG, he played a pivotal role in preserving and promoting jazz culture worldwide.

中平穂積 ／プロフィール

1936年、和歌山県生まれ。日本大学芸術学部写真学科卒業。1961年、アート・ブレイキー初来日の撮影を機にジャズ写真家として歩み始め、半世紀以上にわたり世界のジャズ・ジャイアンツを撮影。同年にジャズ喫茶「DIG」、1967年には「DUG」を創設。1993年新宿コニカプラザで開催した写真展『ジャズの巨人たち』では入場者27,000人を記録。以後、毎年全国各地で写真展を開催。2013年和歌山県文化功労賞受賞。2024年12月、88歳で逝去。作品はレコードやCDジャケット、映画などにも数多く使用され、ジャズの時代を刻んだ写真は今なお世界中で高く評価されている。

Hozumi Nakadaira ／Profile

was one of Japan’s foremost jazz photographers. A graduate of Nihon University College of Art, he began his career in 1961 photographing Art Blakey’s first Japan tour and spent more than five decades documenting the world’s greatest jazz musicians. He also founded the legendary jazz cafés DIG and DUG in Tokyo. Recipient of the Wakayama Prefecture Cultural Achievement Award in 2013, his photographs have appeared on numerous record and CD covers, as well as in films, and continue to be celebrated worldwide.

本展は、パリ市内に30以上の展示空間を展開するフランス屈指のアートネットワーク「ギャラリー・ジョセフ」代表:マイケル・ティムシット の協力のもと開催される。さらに世界規模で展開するアート＆カルチャーマガジン「ACUMEN」等の国際的なメディアを通じ、これまで主に記録写真として評価されてきたジャズ写真を、現代アートの一分野として再定義し、その芸術性を認知、評価される機会を創出する。

Presented in collaboration with Michael Timsit of Galerie Joseph, one of France’s leading art networks, and supported by international media including ACUMEN, the exhibition redefines jazz photography as contemporary art and brings its artistic value to a global audience.

さらに本展は、フランス・パリと日本・東京の二都市同時開催という特徴的な構成を持ち、パリ会場となるギャラリー・ジョセフ(5Rue Sainte Anastase )は、現代都市のエネルギーと創造性を象徴する「動」と位置づけ、一方、東京会場には都の協力のもと、江戸から現代へと受け継がれる歴史的文化遺産・浜離宮恩賜庭園内「芳梅亭」を選定し、日本文化の精神性と静謐さを表現する「静」と捉え対比構造として両会場を構成。「動」と「静」、「現代」と「歴史」、対照的な二つの舞台において、中平穂積が捉え続けたジャズの躍動と静謐を表現し、その作品が持つ普遍的な魅力を国内外へ発信する。

Presented simultaneously in Paris and Tokyo, the exhibition contrasts the dynamic contemporary setting of Galerie Joseph with the tranquil historic atmosphere of Hobaitei at Hamarikyu Gardens, creating a dialogue between movement and stillness.Set between movement and stillness, contemporary and historic, the exhibition celebrates the timeless power of Hozumi Nakadaira’s jazz photography and shares its universal appeal with a global audience.

また中平穂積は生涯を通じ、「決定的瞬間」の概念を提唱し20世紀写真史に大きな足跡を残した写真家アンリ・カルティエ＝ブレッソンを深く敬愛し、かねてよりフランスでの展示を願っていた。ブレッソンが生き、写真芸術を育んだフランス・パリ。そして中平穂積が活動の拠点とした東京。本展は、その二つの都市を結びながら、一人の写真家が遺した軌跡を辿る文化プロジェクトでもある。

Inspired by Henri Cartier-Bresson, whom he deeply admired, Hozumi Nakadaira had long hoped to exhibit in France. Connecting Paris and Tokyo, this exhibition follows the legacy of a photographer whose work transcends borders.

中平穂積の写真は販売を目的とせず、現存するプリント数が非常に少なく、更に2014年、印画紙(モノクロ)の改定により純国調の色味が変わって以降現在に至るまで写真プリントを一切行っていない。当展示では当時の希少なシルバーゼラチンプリントによる写真を一堂に観ることができる貴重な写真展となる。

Never intended for commercial sale, Nakadaira’s original prints are exceptionally rare. Featuring vintage silver gelatin prints, this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to experience these remarkable works together.

2026年6月には、65年にわたり日本のジャズ文化の象徴であった「DUG」がビルの解体に伴い閉店し、一つの時代に幕が下ろされた。「THE TRAJECTORY OF JAZZ 」は、中平穂積が遺したジャズの“軌跡”であると同時に、未来へ続く新たな“軌跡”の出発点である。本展は、中平穂積への追悼としてその功績を讃える”鐘”であると共に、日本のジャズ写真、音楽写真が新たな時代の幕開けを告げる”鐘”となることを願い、中平穂積が遺したジャズの軌跡と、その歩みを共に支えた全ての人々へ深い敬意と感謝を込めて捧げるものである。

In June 2026, DUG, which had been a symbol of Japan’s jazz culture for 65 years, closed its doors due to the demolition of the building, bringing an era to a close.THE TRAJECTORY OF JAZZ is both a tribute to Hozumi Nakadaira’s legacy and the starting point of a new journey. A tribute to Hozumi Nakadaira’s enduring legacy, this exhibition also marks a new chapter for Japanese jazz photography. It is dedicated with profound respect and gratitude to the artist and all who shared his journey.
